Grotte di Catullo

I took this photo at Grotte di Catullo in Sirmione this summer. The name is slightly misleading, as this is not a grotto (it used to be a villa instead), nor is it the place where the Roman poet Catullo lived (the villa was built after the poet’s death, though he visited the city several times). Nonetheless it’s an interesting compound. I hope you enjoy the view and maybe if we all count 1 -2-3 #summer will be here for us right away, right?

Scaliger Castle, Italy

Hohenschönhausen Memorial basement

I am sorry if this photo is disturbing. I happened to be in Berlin again last week for a conference on Open Government Data by Fraunhofer Fokus. On my second day in Berlin I finally went to see the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, which used to be the main prison of the former Stasi. It was a very disturbing visit. This photo was taken in the basement of the original building where the Soviet and then East German authorities used chinese water torture and physical violence. Several thousand people were killed down there. It is still surreal to think about how I attended a conference on Open Government Data and then the next day I saw this scary place that could not even be found on a map 25 years ago, because it was classified as top secret.

Photo of this summer. I took this long exposure photo at Bibione beach in Italy with my Canon EOS 7D on a tripod. I think it was a breathtaking view and I am not 100% sure if the Instagram 1:1 crop is helpful for the presentation in this case. Anyway, it’s definitely worth to get up that early. The light of a sunrise is indeed very special.

Quadriga, Berlin

The Quadriga of the Brandenburger Tor, a former city gate and now famous landmark of Berlin. The Brandenburg Gate was rebuilt in the late 18th century. It is the point of entry for Unter den Linden.
